All About Networking

Many people think that setting up a network of computers is something only large companies would want to do. However, if you have more than 1 computer, networking can be advantageous for you.

What is a network?

A network describes the connection between computers and their associated devices. The computer devices can be anything that can be shared by other computers such as a printer, scanner or zip drive. The type of network that is appropriate in this situation is known as a LAN (Local Area Network).

Advantages of a Network

Setting up a network has its advantages and disadvantages, however most people that have a home network up and running say the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages for the reasons given below.

  • Able to share data and resources.
  • Peripheral devices such as printers, scanners or even zip drives can be used on both computers.
  • Simplifies backing up data as you can centralise your data in one physical place.
  • A single Internet connection can be shared, eliminating the need for multiple modems and phone outlets in the house.
  • Multiplayer games can be played between computers (great for the kids!).
  • In the future, software that allows control of the house such as temperature, lighting, security, music and even the preheating of your oven can be controlled through the network. This could be done within different areas of the house or even remotely through the telephone or Internet.
  • As homes and offices obtain additional computers, networking is a viable option to ensure that resources can be shared between computers with minimum fuss.

If you have 2 or more computers, think about networking.

You will be able to perform backups easily, share 1 printer, instead of buying two, and have two computers connected to the Internet at the same time.

Also the ability to share files with each other, and have a standardised directory structure is great - you may never need your 1.44Mb FDD again.
