The
Do’s and Don’ts When Working with Computers
When
you are using computers every day, you find that you become confident
to perform more computer related tasks. Computer related tasks
could include anything from installing software, adding a printer,
scanner or networking your computers together.
When
you start to play with (and learn more about your computer), there
are some rules that you should follow to keep you out of trouble
– and a very expensive upgrade!
Never
force anything
Computer
components can be fitted firmly, but nothing more forceful than
a firm tug, push or twist should be required to remove or fit
them. If you find you are struggling to insert a cable, then you
may be trying to install it the wrong way.
Never
work with the power on
To
be absolutely sure that the power is off, remove the power cable.
Never
work in areas prone to static
Many
computer components are susceptible to damage by static electricity,
so your chosen workplace should be a static-free environment.
If you can’t find a static free environment, constantly
touch the case to free yourself of static electricity.
Always
mark cables
Before
pulling a cable out of a component, it pays to mark both the plug
and the socket to ensure you re-connect everything correctly.
Always
sort screws and other loose parts
Keeping
any components you remove in clearly marked containers prevents
loss or the discovery you have unidentified parts left over after
putting your computer back together.
Check
Your Systems Hardware
Always
check your system’s configuration before buying new hardware.
Before buying any components, you should always open your system
and ensure that your motherboard has the capability and space
to install them.
Know
when to quit
If
you’re not sure what to do, and you don’t have the
luxury of a computer you can afford to break, take it to a professional.
